The Vines of Southern Italy

The vine has a long history in Southern Italy. Oenotria, the land of vines, is what the Greeks affectionately called the modern ‘Mezzogiorno,’ the southern part of the Italian boot as well as Sicily. Southern Italy was a Greek colony in the centuries before Christ, so much so, the South was known as ‘Magna Graecia,’ literally ‘Greater Greece.’ When the Greeks colonized Southern Italy they brought with them one of the markers of civilization: the vine.

To be specific,, the Phoenicians were the first to bring the vine to Southern Italy, although it was the Greeks who brought both viticulture and viniculture, fundamentally a wine-making culture. From that point on wine has been grown in Southern Italy, and its wines were loved by Roman leaders throughout the Roman Empire, even Julius Caesar himself sung praises of these wines. Southern Italian wine was a well regarded wine well before Barolo or Chianti had been made.

Nonetheless throughout the centuries, wine in the South became less revered and more notorious as it became the main source of Italian box wine. Wines from Apulia, Calabria, Campania, Sicily, and Sardinia, were utilized to bolster feeble vintages from Northern and Central Italy. They were even employed in several Southern French wines for the very same reasons as their Northern Italian counterparts. What a fall from grace!

At the time, Southern Italian wine has gained the attention and approval of the market, particularly in the States, where Italian wine is experiencing rare recognition, at least compared with French wine. The renaissance of the Mezzogiorno’s wines is due to a number of factors all stemming from the modernizing of the South’s industry. Grape production has been restructured starting with massive investments made in the vineyard, thus making lower-yielding crops the norm rather than the exception, which is a step away from jug wine production.

In wine manufacturing, engineering has improved from the middle ages to the modern age in a brief period of time. Refrigeration technology has permitted producers to produce quality white wine, in addition to red. The arrival of wine advisors and major Italian Groups, such as Gruppo Italiano Vini, Zonin, Antinori, Avignonesi, and Mezza Corona, have given to the modernisation of both viniculture and viticulture in Southern Italy. Despite these changes, or rather due to them, Southern Italy is faced with a wine identity crisis as producers decide whether to modernize or remain true to the region’s roots.

About Wine

Wine is a beverage fermented from grape juice containing alcohol. Grapes have a natural chemical balance which allows them to ferment without the need to add any sugars, acid, enzymes, or any other types of nutrients to the ingredients.

When wine is produced, grapes are crushed using different types of yeast. The yeast consumes the natural sugars found in grapes. This consumption converts the grapes into alcohol. Depending on the types of wine produced, many different grape varieties are used to produce wine.

Evidence shows that the earliest productions of wine took place as early as 6000 BC in places like Georgia, Iran, and Israel. Some archaeologists say that as early as 7000 BC grapes were mixed with rice to produce other types of fermented beverages in China. This is considered to be the precursors of what we call today, rice wine.

In Europe, wine dates back to as early as 4500 BC in some of the archaeological sites located in Greece. These same sites contain the earliest evidence in the world of grapes being crushed. Ancient Egypt has a recorded history of wine being used ceremonially. Places like the Roman Catholic Church found wine necessary to celebrate Mass. In France, the monks made wine for years and stored it in caves underground for aging.

Do Your Employers Reward You With Wine – Ours Do

I have only worked at my current employers for about 6 months.

In this short space of time, i have managed to pick up an awful lot of experience within the computer world.

I will admit that it can be a trifle bit embarrassing when you have people who are at least half your age, explaining your work to you. However, you just have to go with the flow and grin and bear it. After all, they may be knowledgeable about their computers, but I have plenty of life experience and could certainly tell them a thing or two. They probably are of the opinion that I am a bit of an old dinosaur and certainly well past my sell by date. Mind you, I reckon they could be quite shocked by some of my past misdemeanors and would certainly view me in a different light if they knew some of the things I got upto at their age!!

Where I work we are all very fortunate and our employers really do go out of their way to look after us.

In our office we are lucky enough to have a few computer consoles and come lunch time the lads take part in their Xbox or Playstation challenge and it can get very competitive at times. We also lucky enough to have a pool table that they all use a great deal.

We have a brilliant staff incentive scheme. This was set up for all members of staff who not only do a great job, but go a little further than they have to.

It works really well and we can be nominated by any other member of staff and then rewarded. So far I have managed to bag a great bottle of Spanish Wine and a fantastic bottle of French Wine.

Others have had tins of chocolates, beauty products, gift vouchers and so the list continues.

A nice bottle of Italian Wine has just been added to the collection of goodies so I might just have to work a little bit harder to see if I can get nominated!!
