Some of the injurious consequences correlated with alcoholism and alcohol abuse that I learned about in this class unquestionably worried me. The ruined lives and numerous difficulties experienced by most alcoholics made me feel like I never wanted to drink alcohol when I became old enough. In short, I did not want to face the damage and ruination that alcohol addicted individuals almost always go through.

Ponder upon this for a moment. What fifteen-year-old individual wants to face premature death due to his or her drinking behavior? What adolescent wants to become so out-of-control regarding his or her drinking that ingesting alcohol becomes the object of one’s life? What teen wants to go to one of the local alcoholic rehabilitation centers to deal with alcohol-related issues before he or she becomes twenty-one?

What young person wants to go through alcohol withdrawals when he or she tries to quit drinking? Why would an individual engage in drinking to such an extent that it would cause serious issues in every area of his or her life? Drinking later in life after an individual has a career, a family, and develops personal responsibilities makes sense. But why would a teenager want to sacrifice his or her education, employment, finances, and relationships for a life that focuses on irresponsible drinking?

These issues were so noteworthy that I talked about some of them in class during the school year. What was totally amazing to me was the number of students who simply didn’t care about the injurious effects of irresponsible drinking that I discussed. It was almost as if they couldn’t be troubled with the truth and how these consequences can ruin their lives. For the first time in my life I started to figure out something that my grandfather used to tell me throughout my adolesence: you can lead a horse to water but you can’t force it to drink.

And even at my young age, I also began to comprehend how liberating, beneficial, and important it is in life to keep away from the unhealthy and debilitating results of alcohol and drug abuse. And understanding this not only gave me the motivation and inspiration to further augment my self worth and self esteem, but it also helped shape the friendships and relationships I made in high school.

Most people really appreciate true friends and to some extent it provides clues to what we are all about. Most people know that best friends are a scarce treasure. You may have tons of friends from work and school but best friends are exceptional.

True friends accept each other warts and all. Despite our imperfections, annoying habits, and other faults we are accepted. Acceptance is the chief feature of long lasting friendships.

Sometimes friends become separated by geography due to jobs, marriage, or other reasons. Sometimes these friends find unique ways to stay connected. Many of us may know of friends that have found new ways to keep the relationship going in this electronic age.

There are a couple of women that found a way to work together in addition to keeping their close association. They were college roommates that had attended schools together since the first grade. Initial job opportunities and marriage found them living many miles apart.

They created an online business based on a shared interest that allows them to raise their children, stay at home, and fuel their friendship. A home income opportunity was the perfect solution.

They nearly surprised themselves when they realized that they could make money blogging about one of their favorite belongings. The websites and personal blogs they had were just for fun to that point.

Friendships are a lot like a fire. You start with tinder and kindling and then throw on the big logs. The fire burns down to red hot embers and with a little effort will never go out. Like a terrific friendship it is welcoming and warming.
