What Can You Use To Get Rid Of Gum Disease?

hydro floss coupon

Recently, within the last seven days actually, I purchased a HydroFloss. A what? Well, it is sort of like a high powered waterpik that uses magnetized minerals that naturally occur in tap water.

Why? For starters, I’m tired of my dentist complaining about my gingivitis which has now become mild to moderate periodontal disease. Will a Hydro Floss change that? I honestly don’t know, yet. Based on what I’ve read about them, it may be possible. I’m a skeptic by nature, but I’m also curious enough to try out different things. Sometimes that strategy works for me and sometimes it doesn’t.

I’ve had a lot of problems with dentists over the years. I don’t believe that all dentists are completely honest. In fact, I had a trained dentist tell me that I had a ‘trouble spot’ that she wanted to drill into. I went to another dentist who didn’t appear to detect any problem or any ‘trouble spot’ at all. That was after waiting six months. If there was a problem that was going to get worse, it certainly didn’t do so.

Another time, a dentist cheerfully suggested a root canal for a pain I was having in a tooth. I declined. In less than two weeks, that pain went away and never came back, without a root canal being done. That was about 14 years ago. I have heard stories from people who went to a dentist to be told that they had several cavities. Upon visiting a different dentist they were told they had none!

I find this trend disturbing. I go to a dentist to maintain my teeth and gums and to make sure that I keep the teeth with minimal damage to the gums. So when unnecessary procedures are recommended, I find it a little annoying. I should be able to trust my dentist but instead, I view her much like I view a car dealership when taking my car in for service. Watch the wallet or get taken. I shouldn’t have to feel that way about my dentist. But I do.

One of the best sales presentations I have ever seen was that of a dental hygienist. She wanted to sell me a ‘root scaling and planing’. During this procedure they anesthetize your gums and use metal instruments to scrape and scale along the root to remove plaque under the gumline.

Whoaaaa! You Need to Fix That Disease In Your Mouth!

Dental disease, specifically those affecting the gums, is one of the most common diseases that affect virtually millions of people. There are many factors that could cause this. As opposed to what some may say about gum disease and tooth loss being only an outcome of plaque and too much intake of sugar, there are actually some other factors that may not have been well disclosed to many as well.

For instance, pregnancy can actually cause the onset of gum disease faster. This is because hormonal changes during pregnancy can create an environment where it is much easier for plaque to flourish and where the gums are more susceptible. So if you are pregnant, you may want to go ahead and see your doctor for preventive procedures as well.

On a side note, oral contraceptives are also shown to increase an individual’s susceptibility to gum disease. People who are taking medications on a regular basis are also prone to dental diseases. Medications can often dry the mouth which also allows bacteria to flourish.
If you are in the habit of grinding your teeth, it is also high time you reverse it, as grinding creates more space in between the teeth and increases the likelihood of pocket traps in the gums.

You may also be interested to know that there is now a test to determine whether you are genetically susceptible to gum disease. This is important because for those who are genetically predisposed to this condition, the amount of oral hygienic measures they take will prove useless in the long run unless other preventive measures are taken.

You Can Prevent Periodontal Disease…

oral irrigator

What is a Periodontal disease? It is a highly developed stage of gum and tissue inflammation. Your periodontist will be able to identify it on your periodical visits. After all you pay him big money to avoid losing your teeth. But besides your dentist, you could invest in a hydro floss, which should not be confused with the hydro pulse – they are two very different devices for different purposes.

During periodontal disease, your teeth will start shaking and people might not like your breath. Finally it falls out and you have to forget about it – no more chewing. If you are curious how this disease is caused, a bacteria causes it and a periodontist will be your next new friend. Its widely seen in people of all ages.

The early phase of a periodontal disease is Gingivitis, which you may have heard off very often. Not only will your teeth disappear, you may also develop other diseases. Yes, the treatment and x-rays will be expensive. A good dentist will be able to make things easy for you. An oral irrigator may also be helpful to you.

Once it is confirmed that you have been taken by the bacteria, a deep cleaning session may be performed. In advanced situations. surgical treatment will become necessary keeping your health and safety in mind. You will also have to buy prescribed medicines to help you cope with the whole treatment and plan.

If you have excellent dental care habits, you may still have to worry about getting this bug. Flossing and rinsing your mouth with a good oxygenated mouthwash made from an ozone generator may also be helpful.

The risk is higher in tobacco chewers due to obvious reasons. But diabetic patients and smokers are also at risk.

Gum Disease, Everything But Fun.

dental care

Definition- Gum disease also known as Periodontitis refers to infection in the area in and around teeth specifically the tissue and bone. The main cause of infection is bacteria found in the tartar and plaque build-up caused by a lack of oral hygiene. Large amounts of toxins are found in the bacteria, having an irritating affect on sensitive tissue.

Targets- No person or even animal is exempted from getting gum disease. However some persons are more susceptible to the condition. Teen females are the first target group identified by researchers and medical professionals. This can be attributed to hormonal activity during the puberty phase making the body more susceptible to bacterial attacks. Smokers fall in the second target group, suffering more from this condition than non-smokers. Your risk for getting gum problems is also greater when you suffer from certain illnesses, take specific medication and wear braces.

Symptoms- You will certainly know if you suffer from gum disease as the condition is very painful and clearly visible in the from of bleeding gums during and after flossing or brushing teeth and gums, gums are unhealthy in colour, sensitive or swollen, gums will pull away from teeth, breath will be very unpleasant and teeth loose or falling out.

Preventing-Keep in mind that prevention is better than cure. Prevention in terms of the disease is so very easy. Proper oral hygiene is the one and only requirement. Teeth should be brushed and flossed regularly, in other words twice per day or after sugary and acidic food or drink consumption, if possible. Floss will reach the impossible to access spaces between teeth, where normal bushing won’t reach.

Treatment- Treatment will be dependant upon the severity of the disease. scaling and root planing are popular methods of both treatment and prevention as tartar and plaque is removed to cure present infection as well as to prevent further or future infection. Antibiotics are very popular in the treatment of gum diseases, taking the form of mouthwashes, gels, fibres or capsules. In extremely severe periodontitis, surgery and gingival grafting should be considered for cleaning infected area.

Xylitol and Your Health…

One of the amazing hidden ‘secrets’ of this century is xylitol. It is truly astonishing on two points. This 5 carbon sugar can help to prevent both tooth decay and gum disease because the bacteria that eat it cannot utilize xylitol as they can glucose (six carbon table sugar).

The second fact to know about xylitol is that it has been both well known in one country and almost unheard of in many other countries at the same time. This astounds me because it clearly demonstrates the limited nature of our human awareness.

Let us take a closer look. Xylitol has been used and well documented to reduce the incidence of dental disease in Finland for over five decades now.  Yet here in the United States and many other countries you will hardly hear of a dentist that promotes it. There are a few, but they are not many.

How can something as beneficial as xylitol, in today’s world, be so unknown to most people despite the fact that Finlanders have been using it since the second world war when regular sugar became scarce.  Later, the dentists and doctors of Finland discovered that their levels of dental health improved due to the use of xylitol as a substitue for sugar. Another item worthy of renewed interest is the
oral irrigator.

Xylitol has one third the calories of an equivalent amount of table sugar. It does not promote tooth decay or the growth of bacteria that cause gum disease or bad breath. It does not require insulin to be metabolized and therefore is of special interest to diabetics.

Few things in this world are perfect and xylitol does have some drawbacks. Pets should not be given xylitol. While a human being has a special metabolic pathway to digest xylitol, many pets do not. Therefore it can be toxic to pets and can even kill them.

You can learn more about xylitol at Xylitol.org. There is plenty of research and information about xylitol there. Oramd is different in that it is an essential oil mix for helping to fight dental disease.

We tend to think that if something is good, that everyone should know about it.  Yet, as this example shows, that is not always the case. There are so many things we just do not yet know.  Perhaps we should resolve to reach further beyond our limited awareness and discover the truth of this world and the universe that is around us.
