Parent’s Guide to Fish Tank Aquariums

As a child, you might have experienced taking care of pet fish. It is common sense to know know that there is more to be done to keep these alive. It is important for you to take care of it and place it in the right fish tank aquariums. Now that you are a parent and your child nags you to give them some fish for pet, you have to assist them to keep them alive. Below are the sugestions for you to share with your kids.

Before shopping for the home aquariums and its equipment, you should make a list first. With your experience in having fish as pets, you would know the basic things to look for and where to purchase them. First, you must decide on the kind of fish tank aquarium that you should buy. Although glass aquariums are good, acrylic aquariums will be a better choice for children. Glass is much heavier, does not chip or break and offers a good inside view of the aquarium. The disadvantage of having acrylic aquarium are-it scratches easily and costs more than the glass aquarium.

Your kids might get too overexcited on trying to beautify the aquarium. Tell them that bright decoration and over decoration will be stressful for the fish. Ask them of what the real domain of the fish is like. The kids will be helped by the suggestive question and they will decorate the fish tank aquarium appropriately.

The job of acquiring a fish for the aquarium will be the largest challenge for you as a parent. Kids and even the adult would like to have lots of fish by the time they have the aquarium. It is your responsibility to tell the kids that the water in the aquarium should be stabilized first before putting any fish. The water temperature should as well be stabilized first and the equipments should be double checked too. To assist and ease the boredom, have a lesson or two about ‘waste management.’ Through this, your kids will know a part of taking care of the fish and at the same time they will be ready too. Over feeding the fish is also one of the habits children would do. Tell them of the feeding time and the effects it can do to the fish if they are not given the proper amount of feeds.

If your kids are on the elementary level, then the explanations have to come simple. Let them know of the fish- its behavior, needs and what to do with it. Do not give them fairy tales about the fish going to the bathroom when they poop. Tell them that the aquarium should be cleaned otherwise, the fish will die. Typically kids that are in middle school or above will understand the nitrogen cycle already. The helpful bacteria and the bad bacteria will help them understand the cycle better.

Your kids will be taught about the value of responsibility and respect early when they have fish as pets. They will be more aware of the fascinating world of aquatic animals. Aside from that, your family will have more learning time together.
