Salt water fish are much more expensive and can be harder to keep alive than fresh water fish but they are also some of the most colorful and beautiful fish in the world. Fresh water fish can’t compare visually to salt water fish, which is why they often cost double, even triple, what a fresh water fish can cost. Here is a list of some of my favorite salt water fish.
Blue Tang
The Blue Tang, sometimes called the Powder Blue Tang is one of the most striking salt water fish due to their bright blue body and the streak of yellow running from their head down to their tail. They can be very skittish and like to hide but after awhile, in the right circumstances, the Blue Tang can become more comfortable and social. The Blue Tang is a large fish so a large fish aquarium is preferable to keeping it safe and happy. You will be hard pressed to find a more unique, beautiful salt water fish than the Blue Tang.
Clownfish
Yes, Nemo from “Finding Nemo” was a Clownfish and will forever be the most famous Clownfish to ever grace the screen. The Clownfish is a great salt water fish because it is very hardy, not picky about food and is one of the more peaceful salt water fish you can find. You can keep single Clownfish happily but to really see them come out of their shell you should keep them as a pair. Some people say that if you are keeping a Clownfish you need a sea anemone for them to keep shelter in and to keep them from being stressed out but the fact is that most Clownfish today are bred in captivity and wouldn’t even known what to do with an anemone if they saw one.
Golden Neon Goby
These fun little guys are peaceful small and are often used to remove parasites from other fish. They are black and yellow and will go well with almost any other salt water fish as long as the other fish are not aggressive towards it. Because the Goby is rather small it can be easy swallowed by other hungry fish so it is best kept in a school to dissuade other fish from messing with them. These are great starter fish if you are just getting into salt water fish keeping.

Unless you are a master salt water fish keeping expert there are a few types of fish you should avoid. These fish are very hard to keep alive and will likely just be a waste of money and cruel punishment for the fish itself.
Angelfish
These amazing looking salt water fish are maybe one of the best examples of how vibrant the colors of a salt water fish can be, sadly, these fish are very difficult to keep and feed and are often very destructive to the fish tank, especially a reef tank. Angels are also very territorial and are not suggested to be kept in pairs. These fish feed on sponge and tunicate which is why they are not a wise choice for the average salt water fish keeper who does not have the proper fish tank supplies and salt water expertise.
Seahorses
One of the strangest and interesting salt water fish the seahorse is nonetheless very difficult to properly take car of in a home aquarium environment. Seahorses are very picky eaters and will often only eat live foods such as ghost shrimp. Captivity bred seahorses are easier to keep than live caught ones but they are still very difficult to keep. These slow feeders should only be kept in tanks with other seahorses, bottom feeders or slow fish so that they can properly get enough to eat and not be edged out by more aggressive fish.
Ribbon eels
The ribbon eel or blue ribbon eel is a very unique, bright colored saltwater eel that is difficult to keep in captivity due to their skittishness and sensitivity to changes in environment. Although it is one of the more peaceful eels it not recommend for purchase by anyone because nearly every case of captive keeping of ribbon eels has led to the eel starving after being captured. There are some reports of people successfully keeping them in captivity it is very rare and not suggested.
