Eco Products and Christmas Presents of Yesteryear
It always amazes me when new trends in eco friendly products and innovations start that many of them hark back to yesteryear. Take some of this year’s green Christmas toys and games for kids many of hem are modernised versions of the same sorts of gifts that our parents and grandparents used to play with.
Remember the Crystal Radio Kit where you build your own radio without any batteries? Well if you don’t, ask your grandparents as I’m sure they would have played with one when they were a child but now, crystal radio kits are back. The radios need only an aerial and earth connection, the crystal picks up the radio waves, and the oscillation provides the power – so no batteries.
There are more modern types of these learning kits too. There are build you own water clock kits. These fantastic kits are a great way to begin teaching children about renewable energy. They can build a water powered clock which can actually be filled with any liquid – even cola. It can keep the kids amused for hours as they search for new fuels to keep their clocks going.
Other educational toys are available based around similar educational principles such as a Stirling Engine kit. This genius type of engine runs on nothing but air – that’s right an engine that requires no fuel. It might not be powerful enough to run your car but it can keep kids amuse for hours as they to work out how it is powered.
While many of these eco-friendly toys and gifts perhaps won’t be as popular as the games consoles and mp3 players all kids seem to yearn for these days, they will certainly make great stocking fillers and will make Christmas have that yesteryear feel.
