The Battle of the 2010 Hybrids

Honda has announced the price tag on the new Insight.  With a MSRP of ,500 on the Prius is a few thousand dollars more expensive than its main competitor; the Honda Insight, which has a MSRP of ,800. The Insight is now the least expensive hybrid out on the market in the U.S.

The Eco Assist feature will improve fuel economy be making sure that the driver does not accelerate too much and therefore waste gas.The ECO socring helps the drive to have a system that allows for the best fuel economy, which is related back to the operator in the form of a miles per gallon readout. The Insight uses the latest hybrid motor techniology called the IMA or integrated motor assist. This new technology further reduces weight, saves on manufacturering costs, and adds to the overall cabin space. The Insight makes good use of Honda’s Intelligent V-TEC engine technology.  Features included on some Insight models are: alloy wheels, cruise control, 6 speaker audio with USB interface, steering wheel mounted paddle shifters, Stability Assist, and a satellite navigation system with voice recognition. The goal of Honda is to make the Insight the top dog in the hybrid market, and this would entail selling more cars then the ever populat Prius.

Toyota’s answer to the Insight is the Prius with a 160hp 1.8L motor has a couple of different driving settings. Those include ECO mode, which allows more of less pedal responsiveness for fuel economy, the EV mode that allows the vehicle to run only on battery power for ½ mile, and the Power Mode which increases pedal sensitivity for more responsive driving. The Pre-Collision system is available as an option on the Prius.  This system comes equipped with a radar that constantly measures the distance of the car ahead and presumably adjusts brake pressure when probability of frontal collision is high. Toyota has a new system of buttons on the steering wheel that will help keep the driver safe.

Although the Honda is the cheaper of the hybrid competitors, the Prius has the better fuel efficiency and is noticeably larger than the Insight.Right now the MPG ratings for the new Insight are at 40 MPG in the city and 43 MPG on the highway, and the Prius comes in at 48 MPG city and 45 MPG on the highway.Traveling more than 20,000 miles in only 365 days (when gas is .50 a gallon), you would spend 19 in fuel on the Insight and 86 on the Prius. When you drive a Prius, the amount of gas saved compared to an Insight is about 53 gallons, so to cover the lower price you would have to drive for 27 years. The Toyota Prius does net a better MPG rating, yet the Honda is a better value due to its cheaper MSRP!
