The favorite horse to win the Kentucky Derby was scratched Saturday morning after his trainer Jeff Mullins found a hot spot on his left front ankle. Even though the horse was submitted to an X-ray and ultrasound that didn’t show any visible damage, the ankle was feeling tender when it was flexed, so the horse was taken out of the race by his owner and trainer because they didn’t want to take any risks since a wet track was expected that day.
David Lanzman, the horse owner, said that he would not take any risks with the colt and that they can race and fight for the title in another opportunity since the good health of the horse is not on discussion. The vet that were on call at Churchill Downs, Larry Bramlage, said that the horse didn’t look like if he was on pain or injured while he was jogging in the morning, but being so close to the Derby it was impossible to know how bad the injure was and to make the horse compete in the afternoon race could have made it worse.
The colt’s trainer expressed to be quite disappointed for the situation. “I’ve been in this business kind of all my life,” said Mullins. “Most of the things I’ve learned in this business I’ve learned by hard knocks in more ways than one. Your biggest dream is to get here, but the biggest nightmare is to get to race day and have to scratch. Right now I don’t think it’s really sunk in that much, but pretty disappointing.”
I want Revenge got the spot after winning the Wood Memorial in a very impressive way since he started last and finished first. His jockey, Joe Talamo, expressed that he felt relieved when they scratched the horse from the main race since he was told that it could have been worse if the horse participates and then something wrong could happen in the track during the race. He said that he just feels fine that the horse is OK.
But I want revenge was not the only horse that was withdrawn from the race, Quality Road, was withdrawn with a hoof problem as well as Win Willy due to an ankle problem, and Square Eddie, because of a shin injury. Trainers and owners are now taking all the necessary precautions with their horses due to the unfortunate events that have happened at the Triple Crown on the last couple of years. Eight Belles was the last one; on last year’s Kentucky Derby the Philly had to be euthanized in the track due to the injuries the she had on her legs.
The trainers have been questioned too since some of the measures that they have been taking are not the proper ones for the horses. A couple of weeks ago some trainers were taken to a court hearing after being discovered that they have been using medication that it is not allowed and also for mistreating the horses leaving them in abandon and malnutrition.
The winner of the Derby was Mine that Bird, who against all odds, had the second highest payment in the Derby history, returning $103.20; she completed the race of 1 ¼ miles in 2:02 minutes.
