Model Train Table
Is this where you plan to put your hobby locomotive track plan? That’s a good spot, but what about when the kids want to use the playroom. That could definitely throw a wrench in the works, huh? It’s good to carefully consider where we place our layout. Let’s think this through a bit:
Just throw it on the floor like your laundry in college:
The lazy solution is to just leave it on the floor. This is not a good decision for little guys like N and HO gauge trains. Bending over and kneeling down do not make for the best hobbying experiences for adults. This sort of an overview of the smaller gauges just makes them look tiny and uninteresting. Not to point out that your locomotives are much more likely to be run over and broken in careless moments. A higher elevation tends to foreground the strengths of HO and N scale trains. The more you consider the viewpoint the better you will be able to control the effect your toy train layout has on viewers.
Pre-existing display areas, the lucky lazy man’s choice
In some residential homes there are built in display areas or elevated areas that lend themselves to hobby train track plans. Again, the central positive of this is that you don’t have to go through the extra effort and cost of setting up a model train table. This is certainly better than putting your trains on the floor for the visual aspect of things. You might try to fool yourself into believing that you have found the perfect spot but think of the negative aspects of this arrangement. These spaces tend to be too small for a hobby locomotive layout and they tend not to be shaped in the right way. So instead of creating a spot for your track plan, you are altering your track plan to fit the awkwardness of your area. Even if you are into the most miniscule varieties of hobby train these areas tend not to work all that well.
Another blessed possibility is that you happen to have a spare table just lying around somewhere:
Some toy trainers just use an old table they had lying around abandoned. This helps in that you can carry the table to where you would like, but most surfaces that are not specifically designed for hobby training have other drawbacks. These spare tables are often not as strong as hobbyists would like and even when they are they have a single inconvenient shape and size which requires you to limit your hobby train setups to the surface’s measurements and not to the model in your mind.
Home-made hobby train areas:
Since many of us enthusiasts are good with our hands a very popular option of toy trainers is to design a area ourselves. Often we handymen and women will extend an existing space to make it work for the toy train layout we had in mind. This is a wonderful decision because it gives your model locomotive a unique platform and because you can create it as you would like. This isn’t for everyone. If you aren’t that into creating furniture then you’ll want to avoid trying this. Home designed surfaces also tend to be too hefty to move easily. Also, if you are pressed for time, this will really add a substantial amount of time that you have to spend getting ready before you even start your actual toy training. These homemade surfaces also tend not to be as portable for those of us who like to show our locomotives around.
Domino style areas:
If you’re willing to spare the expense, the best kind of toy train surfaces are probably the domino style tables. They are called “domino” tables because that can be connected on any side to form any shape, no matter how idiosyncratic the shape. The tables also can be adjusted to sit at more than one height so that you can customize it to the specifics of the surroundings you’ll be displaying your locomotive track plan in. This rights the balance of power between you and your table making it so that you dictate the shape of the area rather than the area dictating the shape of your track plan. Also, because they are lightweight they can more easily be moved out of the way and since they can easily be changed and added to as you see fit, they can grow with your toy training ambitions. You can also more easily transport your table if you want to show your design around. For this reason, these areas are really the best option for model train displays.
With your area decision out of the way you are now free to really embark on your toy locomotive adventure. Bon voyage!
